To make the top of our bikini, you will need a rotating cutter, a cutting mat, an erasable ink pencil, scissors, pins, a safety pin and 2.5m of laminette or elastic. The laminette is a rubber elastic designed especially for swimwear.
For the pattern, I just put my fabric on the back of one of my breasts, I drew the hollow of my breast with a pencil) erasable ink, I determined how high I wanted and drew two straight lines connecting the curve I had drawn and the top of the piece. I’m not sure it’s the best method, but it’s the one I used!
If you don’t want to create your own pattern, you can download my pattern of the bikini top, I make a C-D hat. You can find it in the link in the info bar.
You will need one or two bi-stretch fabrics made of polyester or polyamide and containing elastane. You can also use lycra.
In this video, I will use the overlock machine to assemble and the sewing machine to sew an overlock, but you can use your machine for all steps with an expandable stitch: zigzag stitch, overlock stitch, overlock stitch.
We will fold our fabric in half to obtain two symmetrical pieces, transfer our pattern and cut without forgetting the seam margin and we repeat this operation a second time. So I get four pieces. You can of course use another fabric for the lining to have two swimsuits in one!
And we will also cut strips of our fabric to make the ties. My laminette is 6mm wide, I multiplied this measurement by 4 and added 3 mm to determine the width of my fabric strip. So my strips are 2.7 cm wide.
For the length of the strips, I made two of 70 cm and one of 130 cm.
The assembly process
Making of the straps
First of all, we’re going to build our straps. To do this, we thread our seam on our three strips folded in two, right sides together.
We now iron with laminette on our seam without pulling it. We only accompany him.
We turn our fasteners over on the right side with a safety pin. And we’re now going to make a small sausage with our two 70 cm fasteners, you’ll understand why right after that.
Assembly of the triangles
ne nous reste désormais plus qu’à passer notre attache restante à l’aide d’une épingle à nourrice. On finit par deux nœuds aux extrémités de nos attaches et le haut réversible du bikini est terminé !
We’re going to arrange our triangles right sides together. We place our flange between the two thicknesses, leaving one of the two ends of the fastener available.
We pin the three layers as well as the two layers of the fabric on all our sides.
We go to the machine all around, making sure to leave two openings at the bottom.
For our three thicknesses we can machine several times to make it very solid.
We iron once again on our side seams with laminate.
Then we turn our two triangles over to the right place.
We insert our seam margin inside the openings we have left and stitch 7-8 mm from the edge.
All we have to do now is pass our remaining fastener with a safety pin. We end up with two knots at the ends of our ties and the reversible top of the bikini is finished!
