Today, I propose you to make a tanga! You can retrieve the pattern at the end of this article and follow the instructions on my YouTube channel or by following the instructions below.
To make a Tanga, you will need:
- A sewing machine
- A rotary cutter and a cutting support
- A water erasable chalk or ink pencil
- Of pins
- Of a rule
- Matching yarn
- And an iron
In terms of materials, you will need:
- Stretch lace
- Stretchy plumetis tulle
- Viscose, cotton or stretch polyester to make up the bottom of the panties
- Satin ribbon
- From elastic with pimples
- And 5 mm wide lingerie elastic band. It is optional, you can also use a pimpled rubber band.
- Concerning the dimensions, you can find the dimensions in the info bar:
Stretch lace: the length corresponds approximately to your pelvic circumference + a few cm for the seam margins
Stretch tulle, about 25 cm wide by 30 cm high
Viscose, cotton or stretch polyester to make up the bottom of the panties, about 20 cm by 20 cm
Satin ribbon, 3 cm wide and 24 cm long
Elastic with pimples, corresponding to your waist circumference – 10 cm. Make sure when passing it around your pelvis that you are not tight and do not forget to add sewing margins of about 1 cm
5 mm wide and between 80 and 90 cm long lingerie elastic or pin elastic.
We place our pattern piece “behind” on the tulle, we draw our pattern with chalk and then we come to transfer sewing margins of 0.5 cm, then we cut at these sewing margins.
Then we place our pattern piece “in front” on the rest of the tulle and repeat the same operation. Then we reuse the front on the fabric that will serve as the bottom of our panties, we draw our seam margins, always at 0.5 cm and then we cut.
Finally, we will come to cut our rectangular piece of lace. It looks more like a strip than a rectangle because it will go around your pelvis. The lace must be relatively elastic, you will cut a strip which, in width will measure about ten cm plus a seam value of 0.5 cm on the side of the fabric which will be cut raw and which, in length will make your waist circle, without adding any seam margin.
Then we will bring our strip of fabric edge to edge on the right side, place the pattern piece “behind” centered on the ends and cut, which will give you a rounded shape.
Concerning the pin elastic, the best way to determine the length is to place it around your pelvis, where the Tanga will arrive and to determine the most aesthetic elasticity possible. That should be 15-20% less than your pelvis circumference.
To begin, we will overcast our lace piece with a surfil stitch (06) or a zigzag stitch if you don’t have one (04).
We will come and place the tulle pieces in front and behind, right sides together, the back side facing you, then we place the bottom of the panties right sides together with the back of the back side. I must admit that this step is really tricky the first time. We will build and then stitch the three layers on the lower part using a zigzag stitch (03).
Then, we will place the bottom of the panties and the upper edge of the front face to face, we iron and then we prick at 0.5 cm, still using a zigzag stitch (03). We turn the part over to the place and then we go back.
We will now build a 0.5 cm hem at the sides.
We place a very loose elastic on the back of our piece and, with the help of a triple zigzag stitch (05), we will come and bite the elastic taking all the time necessary because it is a really thorough step. Don’t forget to join the two ends of the lace band on the backside. The elastic band will be sandwiched between the band and the backside.
Finally, the pimpled elastic is sewn to the waist of a triple zigzag stitch (05) and the knot is made.
We will simply put the satin ribbon facing you, fold one side, then the other and wrap a thread in the middle to form and hold the knot in place. It is attached to the back of the Tanga by hand at the level of the pimpled elastic and your tanga is finished.
Feel free to ask me questions if anything is unclear! And in terms of the pattern’s cut, you’ll have to cut on the lower side (or inside if you prefer) of the huge line I drew with the marker! 😀
Lingerie is certainly my favorite thing to sew. For me, every woman has the right to feel sensual, sexy, desirable, well, confident just by wearing a small piece of lingerie. There are many elements that make it possible to have self-confidence. Believe me, this very small piece of fabric, if it is well made and with beautiful materials, will contribute to it!
